Your First Night Out in a While

You may have noticed in my bio that it says I am writing a book blog during Covid until my Cabaret gets up and running again. Well folks, the time has come. Storytime Cabaret is back!!!

from the left Quinn O’Briant and Louisa Merchant (me) :Co-producers and emcees of Storytime Cabaret, Paula Novelle Davis: owner and creative genius behind Heck House, Intellect Allison: incredible musician, and Yeme Jeanee: burlesque performer extraordinaire.

To say it is back is actually a misnomer because our first show was scheduled for March 13, 2020, and for some reason, it didn’t happen. You can probably guess why. Even though my older brother called me in February to ask me if I had seen the movie Contagion and to ask that I get six months of prescriptions for my dad, I thought he was having a nervous breakdown, and I remained in denial until 11 am the morning of March 13th. Oh well. Why the hell is my brother always right???

So we are back from our failure to launch for our LAUNCH SHOW on May 22nd at an incredible Covid safe, outdoor venue near the Dekalb Farmer’s Market called Heck House.

Heck House, amazingly fun and creative outdoor venue and space for workshops located at 3498 E Ponce de Leon Ave, (driveway on Milton St.), Scottdale, GA 30079, contact  (678) 633-0900

People will wear masks when not at their seats which are spread out. Really cool thing is it is BYOB and BYOpicnic. So it is a cheap and (Covid safe!) first date for those of you who just met online and those of you who haven’t been away from your kids in 15 months (or both!)

The tables are spread out, and you can bring your own chairs if you prefer. Doors open at 7:30 pm so you can enjoy your picnic dinner before the show starts at 8:30pm.

You can get your tickets here: bit.ly/launchtoheck…..you can just copy this link into a browser.

How did Storytime Cabaret come to be? I am a reality storyteller who has participated in many types of storytelling venues like the Moth (a national storytelling nonprofit organization that is hosted on NPR but also has live shows in cities including Atlanta..you can see them on zoom now) https://themoth.org/ and Carapace http://www.bigpinchworld.com/newcarapace.html, an Atlanta offshoot of the Moth.

but I also love drag, burlesque, live music, dance, aerial performance and other art forms, so I was like, “Why not have it all?”

Our shows will feature two extraordinary storytellers. On May 22nd you will see Jazzhands and Nikki Roberts.

Jazzhands is a 4 time Moth Storytelling Champion as well as a performance artist.

Jazzhands is also the author of my favorite bio ever written. Here it is: “Jazzhands is a queer immigrant award-winning educator and author, a yogi, a Radical Faerie, a Camp Camper, a level 44 Pokemon trainer, a mixologist and a four-times Moth StorySlam winner. As a kid, they once told a funny story and the audience’s laughter made them feel they could maybe be forgiven for being queer. Now they tell stories to try to forgive the world.”

Nikki Roberts, phenomenal storyteller and social justice activist

Nikki is one of those rip your face off she’s so good public speakers who is so compelling and charasmatic, even in one on one conversations, you need to have a piece of paper and a pen and write down what she says because it is so well put, valuable and memorable.

We move from storytelling to aerial performance featuring the incredible duo the Flying Seraphim!

The Flying Seraphim about to Fly

You’re not going to see me tie silks to a roof beam and haul myself up there to put my legs in positions that would make a 12 hour donkey ride down a volcano look like a walk in a park, but you are going to see them do that.

Next we feature drag king, Al Schlong, international man of mystery. A socially distanced support team will be available for people who feel their post Covid root chakras opening up in response to Al’s performance which can be both exciting and unsettling. Fear not folx: we’ll walk you through it!

Amazing Musician: Intellect Allison

Quinn and I were just blown away when we heard Intellect Allison. You will be too. Check it out

And our amazing Burlesque performer, Yeme Jeanee. If a picture tells a thousand words, this one certainly does, rendering me speechless.
